Celebrating your four-legged family

Thursday 20 August, 2026

There is a reason dogs have earned the title of man's best friend. They bring companionship, routine, energy and plenty of personality into our lives, often becoming such an integral part of the family that it is difficult to remember life without them.

International Dog Day on 26 August is the perfect opportunity to celebrate everything we love about our canine companions, while also recognising the many ways responsible dog ownership can benefit our own wellbeing.

For starters, dogs encourage us to get moving. A daily walk is good for both owner and dog, creating a reason to step outside, explore the neighbourhood and maintain a regular routine. Research shows that dog ownership can support physical fitness and heart health, while pets more broadly can provide companionship, reduce feelings of loneliness and create opportunities for social interaction.

There is also something wonderfully grounding about coming home to a dog. Their enthusiasm is rarely complicated. A walk, a game, a meal or simply some time together can be enough to turn an ordinary day around.

Of course, the relationship works both ways. In return for the companionship and joy they provide, our dogs rely on us for their health, comfort, exercise and enrichment.

That is where a little thoughtful pet care can make a big difference. A balanced diet, regular exercise, grooming and appropriate veterinary care all form part of keeping dogs happy and healthy. Mental stimulation is important too, particularly for intelligent or energetic breeds. Interactive toys, food puzzles and games can provide enrichment when the weather keeps you indoors.

And then there are the small things that simply make life better for your dog. A comfortable bed, a new toy, a practical lead or harness, quality treats or an accessory that makes walks easier can all be worthwhile additions.

At Petstock at Kiaora Place, pet owners can find a comprehensive range of products and services, alongside a team that understands that every pet has different needs. The store offers grooming, a DIY dog wash, adoption services, puppy school, ID tag engraving, a Health & Wellbeing Centre and click and collect.

International Dog Day is ultimately a celebration of the bond between people and their pets. So take the opportunity to go for a longer walk, introduce a new game, enjoy some extra cuddles or simply spend a little more time together.
