Chickpeas and why is it healthy for you

Monday 01 May, 2023

A creamy, nutty taste paired with a grainy texture makes chickpeas one of the tastiest and healthiest snacks you can get your hands on. They are rich in vitamins and minerals (like manganese and vitamin B) as well as fibre which can aid digestion for a healthy gut. Chickpeas are legumes that are used in many world cuisines and taste great in a variety of dishes or even on their own.

For those looking to control food intake and lose some weight after the Easter feasting, chickpeas can keep you fuller for longer. This is due to their high levels of protein which cuts down the hunger pangs for those wanting to manage their weight. This also makes them the perfect replacement for meats and fish in many vegetarian and vegan dishes. One of the best things about chickpeas is their versatility in dishes. You can stuff them in a wrap, you can use them as a main protein in a salad; you could even blend them up and make your very own Hummus dip.

Here’s a quick and easy recipe to try: head over to Woolworths at Kiaora Place, grab a couple of cans of chickpeas, a can of whole peeled tomatoes, peppers, onions, eggs, cumin, paprika and cayenne pepper. Dice the onions and mix them in with the tomatoes and spices in a pan. Crack two eggs over the top, add chickpeas, then season. Cover the pan and cook for 5 to 8 minutes and voila, a perfectly delicious, healthy and hearty meal that you can enjoy for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
