5 ways to pamper your pooch

March 23 is International Puppy Day. Here’s how to make them feel special

It's no secret that Australians love dogs, but during Covid, the number of new puppies reached a truly mind-boggling level.

Statistics support the fact that we’ve welcomed four-legged friends into our hearts and homes in record numbers.

Happily, restaurants, cafés and bars are allowing pets to be part of the action in greater numbers by inviting their patrons to bring them along and providing the space for them to be accommodated safely and comfortably.

In fact, there’s so much on offer in the eastern suburbs to appeal to the indulgent dog owner and to inspire doggie delight. From harbourside stay-cations in pup friendly hotels to some of the city’s best and most scenic off-leash parks and beaches.

With International Puppy Day rolling around, it’s time to show your dog how much you care with some extra special attention. Here are some suggestions on how to spoil them

  1. Book a grooming session. Grooming your dog is more than just an indulgence. Being regularly washed, clipped, brushed and preened helps your pup stay cool when the mercury rises and allows you to check for parasites and abnormalities. It’s also the perfect time to examine their nails, teeth, ears, and eyes, and to deal with any problems that need attention.
  2. Treat them to special toys and gifts. Your local pet store or online stockist will have a range of fun things for your pooch, from stuffed toys for dogs that enjoy light play to tug toys and ball tossers for the more energetic pooch. A brand new collar and lead will also have them looking smart and standing out from the pack.
  3. Throw them a “paw-ty”. Yes, it’s a thing! Treat your pup and a gang of their human and doggy besties to a little shindig in the dog park. Taking along a dog-friendly cake or treats adds to the fun. If you really want to spoil them (and add a little wow factor) you can outsource to a professional puppy party planner. Chances are you don’t know when your dog’s actual birthday is, so celebrating on their “gotcha day” or a day like International Puppy Day is the next best thing.
  4. Spoil them with premium food and treats. Unconditional love and attention is the way to a dog’s heart. Good food and the occasional treat certainly doesn’t hurt either! The range of healthy and natural dog food has grown dramatically in recent years and with a bit of research you’ll be sure to find one that suits your pup perfectly. Consult your vet to find out whether bone and fresh meat treats from the butcher are suitable for your dog.
  5. Indulge in some extra exercise. When it comes to your pup’s happiness and wellbeing, a walk or run in the park or along a dog-friendly beach is always the best form of pampering.

So there you go! Our top 5 ways to pamper your pooch – whether it's on International Puppy Day or any day you want to give them a little bit more love and attention.
