Understanding Chronic Pain: National Pain Week 2025
Monday 14 July, 2025
From 21–27 July, National Pain Week 2025 invites Australians to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and support the millions of people living with chronic pain.
What is Chronic Pain?
Chronic pain is pain that lasts beyond normal healing time—typically for 3 months or more. Unlike acute pain, which alerts us to injury, chronic pain often persists without a clear physical cause, making it complex and deeply personal. It can affect mood, sleep, relationships, and the ability to work or enjoy everyday activities.
Common Types of Chronic Pain Includes
- Muscle and joint pain, including back and neck pain
- Headaches and migraines
- Neuropathic pain, such as nerve damage or sciatica
- Arthritis and inflammatory pain
- Pelvic pain and pain associated with endometriosis
While there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, early diagnosis and a multidisciplinary approach can make a real difference.
Therapies That Help
Managing chronic pain often involves more than medication. Allied health professionals—including physiotherapists and occupational therapists—play a key role in helping people move better, strengthen key areas, adapt daily activities, and reduce pain flare-ups. Techniques like dry needling, manual therapy, and tailored exercise programs are just a few of the tools available.
