World Vegetarian Day

Thursday 20 August, 2026

World Vegetarian Day is celebrated on 1 October, and it is a great time to rethink the way vegetables feature on the dinner table. You do not need to become vegetarian to enjoy the benefits of eating more plant-based meals. In fact, one of the simplest approaches is to introduce a single meat-free dinner each week.

The Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend eating a wide variety of nutritious foods across the five food groups, including plenty of vegetables and legumes while the Australian Government health advice notes that fruit and vegetables provide essential nutrients and dietary fibre. In particular eating a variety of produce can support overall health and help reduce the risk of chronic disease.

The idea of one meat-free dinner a week is appealing because it feels achievable. Rather than thinking about what you are taking away, focus on the dishes you are adding to your repertoire.

• Eggplant parmigiana is a great place to start. Layers of roasted eggplant, tomato, herbs and melted cheese make it satisfying enough to take centre stage at the dinner table.

• Chickpea & Vegetable Curry provides a useful source of plant-based protein and pair beautifully with seasonal vegetables, aromatic spices and rice or flatbread.

• Mushroom and spinach risotto. Creamy rice, earthy mushrooms, fresh greens and plenty of parmesan create a comforting meal that feels suitably indulgent despite being vegetable-led.

Woolworths makes experimenting with meat-free meals particularly easy, with a wide selection of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as pantry staples, grains, legumes and other ingredients. Its collection of vegetarian recipes also provides plenty of inspiration when you are looking for something beyond the usual repertoire.

And you do not have to cook at home to enjoy a more plant-focused meal.

At The White Rabbit, the menu includes vegetarian and vegan options, such as halloumi and zucchini fritters and XO chilli scramble with mushrooms.

Cali Press is another easy option, with its focus on whole-food meals and plant-based choices, including options such as grilled tamari tofu and a BBQ mushroom brisket bowl. And for something casual, Bake Bar offers vegetarian and vegan-friendly options alongside its artisan breads, pastries and café menu.

The point is not perfection. It is simply about creating more variety and making vegetables a more central part of the way we eat.

So why not choose one night a week to go meat-free? You might just discover a new family favourite. Find fresh ingredients, inspiration and plenty of dining options at Kiaora Place, the vibrant heart of Double Bay.
